Embracing the Journey: Rocking and Rolling with Jesus

On August 17, 2025, Pastor TJ Joyner of Walnut Springs Baptist Church shared a sermon from Acts chapter 14, inviting us to consider the concept of "rocking and rolling" in our spiritual journeys. While the phrase might evoke thoughts of a popular music genre, Pastor Joyner reminded us that it originally referred to the motion of ships navigating turbulent waters. Just as sailors contend with waves, so too do followers of Christ navigate the ups and downs of life, experiencing both peace and tribulation.

The Reality of Tribulation

Pastor Joyner emphasized that having Jesus as the captain of our lives doesn’t exempt us from challenges. In John 16:33, Jesus assures us, “In the world, you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world.” This promise of peace amid trials is a cornerstone of our faith and a reminder that our journey with Christ is not always easy.

During his sermon, Pastor Joyner drew parallels between the challenges faced by the Apostle Paul and the rocky nature of human hearts. He referenced the parable of the sower from Matthew 13, illustrating how some receive God’s word with joy but quickly fall away when tribulation arises. This serves as a call for us to examine our hearts and ensure they are rooted in steadfast faith.

The Example of Stephen and Paul

Pastor Joyner shared the story of Stephen, the first martyr of the early church, who faced a violent death at the hands of those who rejected the message of Christ. Despite the brutality of his execution, Stephen’s faith remained unshaken, and he exemplified the hope of resurrection. In contrast, Saul of Tarsus—who later became Paul—was initially a supporter of this violence. Yet, God transformed his heart and used him mightily for the Gospel.

In Acts 14, we see Paul enduring persecution, being stoned and left for dead, yet rising up to continue his mission of spreading the Good News. This incredible resilience challenges us to reflect on our own commitments and the strength we draw from our faith.

Our Mission as Believers

The sermon encouraged us to consider our roles in the world. Are we “rock throwers,” quick to judge and criticize, or are we on a mission to uplift, encourage, and share the love of Christ? Pastor Joyner urged us to be like Paul and Barnabas, who dedicated their lives to strengthening believers and spreading the Gospel, even in the face of adversity.

He concluded with a poignant reminder of Jesus’ encounter with the woman caught in adultery in John 8. Rather than condemning her, Jesus offered forgiveness and a fresh start, illustrating the heart of our mission as followers of Christ: to point others to the Savior who offers hope and redemption.

A Call to Action

As we reflect on this message, let us ask ourselves: Are we simply going through the motions, or are we actively participating in God’s mission? Are we ready to support one another through life’s tribulations while sharing the hope we have in Jesus?

Pastor Joyner's sermon calls us to draw closer to God, repent of our sins, and commit ourselves to serve Him wholeheartedly. If you’re feeling burdened by sin or unsure of your faith journey, know that today is an opportunity to turn to Jesus, who is ready to forgive and save.

As we close, let’s seek to strengthen one another and remain steadfast through the trials we face, knowing that our Savior has overcome the world. Together, let’s embrace the journey of faith, rocking and rolling with Jesus as our guide.
